RVA Spots : Shoryuken Ramen Pop Up Shop The Jackdaw

It’s not a secret my boyfriend and I like to go to noodle shops. We’ve tried just about everyone in the city, but one we keep going back to is Shoryuken. The menu is lovely, the drinks fantastic (the pile driver mule is Blaine’s favorite) and the ambiance just hip enough.

Sunday, they opened their restaurant up to the Jackdaw for a popup Chinese experience. I decided it was a one time deal and we had to go. So, off we went in the rain to try things I couldn’t even pronounce. First up dumplings (because duh) these dumplings were nothing I had ever tasted - shrimp, black bean, cabbage and something I didn’t know. Delicious! Next up was Ci Fan Gao, basically a rice cake (I wasn’t wowed, not too much flavor, but it was okay). For my main course, I had to try the Spicy Dan Dan Mein Soup, with squid ink noodles. Yes they were black noodles and tasted AMAZING. I’m somewhat adventurous when it comes to food, but this was probably my biggest leap. But I am so glad I tried it.

My Spicy Dan Dan Mein Soup - Squid Ink Noodles are the black things in there!

The pop-up was certainly not for the faint of heart. Check out that menu, many of us wouldn’t recognize 90% of the words on their, but I took a chance and it paid off. It was a fun night of trying new things. Another awesome thing about the Richmond food scene, one night to try the unexpected in a familiar place.
