Really Richmond: Pleasant's Hardware

I decided to start this “Really Richmond” series after driving by, soon to be gone, Pleasant’s Hardware. The series will focus on things that are, simply put, really Richmondy. They will be things that you automatically think of when you think of our dear city. Think Ukrop's, The Diamond (that should be fun), Texas Beach and more. These are the places and things that make our city what it is. And what better place to start than Pleasant’s Hardware.

I am sure many of you are aware, but Pleasant’s has been sold. Originally their space was going to be used to build a new Whole Foods and they just planned on scooting down the block, but over the past few months things happened and the ownership decided to go a different direction. And now, Pleasant’s as we know it will join Ukrop’s in Richmond heaven.

Known for it’s friendly, local service, Pleasant’s was where your dad went when you were growing up. Over time, we have seen more Home Depots and Lowes enter into our fair city (not knocking these stores at all, if you read my blog you know I am an avid Lowe’s customer) and with that the neighborhood hardware store has been in slow decline, but Pleasant’s held strong, at least for a little while.

But now, after 101 years, it is time to say goodbye. Closing at the end of the month, Pleasant’s seems to want to say goodbye to Richmond in the most authentic way possible - sales and a big ass sign that could cause accidents on Broad Street. I pulled into the parking lot and had a sense of nostalgia. Richmond will feel different for awhile, but we will be okay. We got over Ukrop's and we can get over this, but I have a feeling we will not soon forget Pleasant’s.
