Richmond, The Land of Festivals

It all starts when the weather gets sticky, the air thick with humidity, you find yourself eating the best damn gyro of your life, watching some bizarre dance and drinking wine by the bottle in a church parking lot off Grove and Malvern.
The Greek Festival is the unofficial start of Richmond’s summer festival season. Traditionally the weekend after Memorial Day. It’s always hot in RVA. There is always a threat of thunderstorms. And you will, without a doubt see eighteen people you never expected to see, but should have, because literally everyone goes.
To the best of my knowledge (limited at best) the Greek Festival in its 41st year, is our longest standing festival in Richmond. Steeped in tradition and nostalgia, it reminds me both of my childhood and my post grad days.
ProTip: Hit the wine line first, bring a buddy. Buy two bottles. Enjoy while standing in the endless food lines.
So now that it’s Sunday and Greek Festival Weekend is coming to a close, what do we have to look forward to this summer? Literally everything. Richmond is not one to skimp on its food and beverage festivals. There’s a bacon fest, oyster day, craft beer festival, you name it, it’s happening this summer. Honestly we have festivals all year round, but the meat (food pun intended) happens in the lazy, hot, hot days of summer.
But most immediately, we have Broad Appetit today. Basically a culinary battle in the Arts District. Expect for your favorite restaurants in town to pull out all the stops. They are, after all, competing for various categories, from To Dine For (best signature dish) and To Diet For (best dessert). There is also a People’s Choice Award that you can fill out right on the world wide web.
So, to you, my fellow foodie, alcohol loving, music listening Richmonders, see you out there!
