RVA Spots: The Dairy Bar

I walk into The Dairy Bar on a summer Saturday morning and I immediately feel nostalgic. It hasn’t changed at all in the 27 years I have been alive, and many before that I’m sure.

I used to go on “dates” with my dad when I was little, so with a nod to my childhood, we headed there for another date. (We did bring my mom along this time.) Greeted by the nicest servers, sat immediately and served coffee quickly, I was already in memory heaven.

I looked around at all the colored in cow pictures hanging on the walls, thinking I’m sure I have a few somewhere around here. The menu is still the same too, which is great, because they have the best pancakes in the whole world! I knew what I was getting before I walked in the door, despite not being there in 10 years. I wanted the short stack with sunny side up eggs and bacon.

My memory did not deceive me and yes, yes they still have the best pancakes in the whole world! Still melt in your mouth buttery goodness. I was in love. Taking a step back in time when I was a kid and there was milk where my coffee was that day. It was perfection. My mom and dad had wonderful meals as well and a funny story about my mom not understanding that an everything bagel was a flavor not the number of options they offered.

We ended our meal by ordering milkshakes to go, our tradition. Perhaps not something I would have ordered as a kid, I got the mocha, dad a chocolate and mom and cookie dough/mocha mix. These are the milkshakes worth indulging in, worth being bad on your diet.

It's really hard to pick

If you just want an honest to goodness all American breakfast meal, head to the Dairy Bar as soon as you can, the pancakes and milkshakes are waiting for you, along with about 70 years of Richmond history.
