I do not get my hair done. There was a point in my life where I don’t think it was cut for 3 years. Friends essentially had to hold an intervention. I’m better now, I get my hair cut to my shoulders about once a year now. While that may not seem like the best upkeep, it’s the best I got y’all.
I recently decided I needed to step up my game a little. A few of my friends go to Smoke and Mirrors in Scott’s Addition, right behind En Su Boca, and their hair always looks fantastic, so I caved in. I wanted my hair to look fantastic too. Come to find out, fantastic books fast, so I waited, and waited and waited, and then by a miracle of god an opening became available last week and I pounced!
That Friday I had taken off work so I could get my haircut and do a few other things that have been piling up. I got there at about 10 am and I was nervous, furiously texting my friends who asked what my plan was. Plan?! Tell her I want to look amazing…? Apparently that’s not good enough and you need to give more direction. A 5 minute text chat later and I sorta had a plan, probably not ideal, but when I got in the chair, all was well. Sara, my stylist, understood. I told her I don’t do this often, but I wanted a shoulder length cut with subtle color. She got me. She recommended a slightly angled cut that was a little longer in the front with subtle balayage highlights. I said do what you gotta do.
So in I went, down the rabbit hole, I was drinking that kool-aid! She cut, she painted my hair with something that smelled like bleach, and then I sat there, just waiting for fabulous to kick on. After awhile, she took me to wash my hair (my favorite part!). She cut a little more and colored a little more and then started to style. I could tell it was looking good, but I wasn’t yet sure how good. She gave me subtle curls to match my subtle color. I asked 1 thousand questions about the process that I would never be able to remember. When she was done, I wanted to scream! I looked PHENOMENAL! She changed my whole head of hair in just 2 hours. I have never liked a haircut more.

We took some pictures to send to my friends after and I posted one on social media. The response was staggering. People really liked it (which tells me they really didn’t like my old hair, oh well, me either). After having the new cut for a week, I’ve actually learned the subtle curl and gotten used to styling my now shorter hair. I love Sara from Smoke and Mirrors!
