RVA Things: InLight

Richmond does not lack art events. From First Fridays to the classic VMFA openings, there is something it seems every weekend. But one event seems to stand out from the rest each year - InLight Richmond.

When trying to describe this I struggle. It’s an outdoor light installation event, but also interactive and also kind of like a party. It’s one of those things you have to see to understand.

This year’s InLight was last Friday and held throughout the neighborhood of Scott’s Addition. With a Lantern Parade down Clay Street to kick off the event, people were dressed in funky costumes and glow sticks were visible from everywhere you looked.

You walked down the street and would stumble upon different displays. Most I didn’t quite understand, but they were intriguing (and also very, very weird at times - looking at you Deer Video at The Veil). At one point we were walking through rooms in a building that screamed serial killer.

There were some things that I was very interested in, like the light up RVA map and another exhibit that was old photograph and video with peaceful music played on the side of one of the buildings.

The breweries in the neighborhood got in the spirit and were packed with crowds. There were food trucks and dance parties as well.

While it’s not always my taste, InLight is always thought provoking!
