I feel like I’m late to the party, but I made it. Little Nickel has been (in my unresearched opinion) the most talked about restaurant opening of 2018 in Richmond. But I get it.
I walked over with my girlfriends right at 11 am when they opened on Saturday. We were the second group there and quickly followed by many more. It was fun to see it “empty.” Of course I’ve seen all the instagrams of the cool interior but seeing it in person was awesome.
The vibe is totally island cool. It reminded me of old Elvis films. Naturally I took a bathroom selfie with the cool flamingo wallpaper. Every inch of the place is decorated so smartly. It’s a treat for the eyes the entire time you are there.
We were seated and immediately started to discuss our options. We decided to dive in and order the punch bowl to share. It was delicious and not too sweet with all sorts of goodness in it. I remember brandy and rum, but that’s it. They bring an actual punch bowl to your table and you serve yourself with a ladle. We all loved it!
Next, we ordered the hawaiian nachos with pork. The nachos are topped with crispy bacon, grilled pineapple, jalapeño, queso, pico, pickled onion and salsa verde. We all agreed these were possibly the best nachos we had ever had. There were five of us and this served all of us well.

After much deliberation (and a very patient waitress), we settled on our entrees. Since we were there during the day we had an option of sandwiches, salads and starters. The after 5 pm entrees look divine and I can’t wait to go try them. I ordered the lamb cheesesteak on the waitress' recommendation with the shoestring fries.

Pretty sure the whole table was jealous when my meal arrived. While their food was good (salads and other sammies) I got the most indulgent and (I think) the most delicious. The lamb was covered in the same queso from the nachos and was excellent. The shoestring fries were a hit around the table as I had hands coming from all directions. I get it. They were great. Slightly crispy and seasoned with fresh herbs.
Overall we had an excellent time and our service was exceptional. I cannot wait to go back to try more from the menu. I will say, it’s going to be hard not to repeat my exact same order. It was that good.
